From variety to viable organisation

Why autonomy, intelligence and coordination have to be designed together

A practical route from distinctions and disturbance to the Viable System Model.

Follow this journey interactively

  1. Count differences that matter

Variety begins with distinctions. Different observers and purposes reveal different sets of possible states.

    Read Variety

  2. Match response to disturbance

Only usable response variety can reduce disturbance variety. More options that cannot affect outcomes add noise, not regulation.

    Read Requisite variety

  3. Reduce what must be handled

Attenuation filters or redesigns variety, but must retain exceptions and ethical visibility.

    Read Variety attenuation

  4. Increase usable repertoire

Amplification adds sensing, capability, authority and relationships rather than simply adding activity.

    Read Variety amplification

  5. Transform across boundaries

Different organisational worlds need coding and decoding. The information is changed in the crossing.

    Read Transduction

  6. Choose the system-in-focus

Operational units may themselves be viable systems. Requirements recur, but implementation changes with level and environment.

    Read Organisational recursion

  7. Hold identity and adaptation together

The design question is whether the whole can keep acting coherently while its environment changes.

    Read Viability

  8. Hold autonomy and cohesion together

The VSM examines whether operations, coordination, control, intelligence and identity form a viable whole without crushing local variety.
