Organisational recursion
A domain-specific use of recursion in which an organisational system contains operational units that may themselves be treated as systems with structurally corresponding viability requirements at another level.

Summary
In the VSM tradition, a viable operational unit may itself contain operations and meta-systemic functions. The same broad viability requirements recur, while purpose, environment, scale and implementation differ at each level.
Implications for practice
Organisations often centralise decisions that require local variety or mistake reporting lines for system levels. Recursion helps locate the system-in-focus and test whether each operational unit has sufficient autonomy and regulatory support.
Key distinctions
- recursive viability vs repeated organisation chart
- system-in-focus vs fixed hierarchy level
- structural correspondence vs identical implementation
- autonomy vs independence
- recursion vs decomposition
Historical development
- Stafford Beer developed recursive viability within management cybernetics
- Diagnosing the System for Organizations made the model operational
- later VSM practice developed recursive mapping techniques
Ideas it depends on
- recursion
- viability
- operational autonomy
- system-environment distinction
- meta-systemic regulation
Further developments
- recursive VSM diagnosis
- multi-level governance
- autonomy-cohesion design
- escalation and exception principles
Connections to practice
- choose the system-in-focus before mapping
- test whether operational units are genuinely viable or merely departments
- map environments at each level
- avoid forcing one diagram onto every scale
Common confusions
- every hierarchy is recursive
- recursion means the same five departments at every level
- autonomy means no coordination
- one VSM diagram represents the whole organisation once and for all
Further checks
- exact Beer primary passages
- comparative practice evidence
- limits and critiques of recursive mapping

Status: candidate · Relation: uses
The VSM embeds viable systems within viable systems; this is functional recursion in Beer's model, not an inference from repeated box shapes.

Status: provisional · Relation: applies
This is a provisional semantic or practice crosswalk. It does not establish historical influence, equivalence, efficacy or universal applicability. Item-level source review and curator acceptance are still required.

Claims and disputes
The VSM is publicly described by Metaphorum as drawing on the mathematics of recursive systems; the precise organisational-recursion formulation still requires primary Beer page locators.
