Summary
Amplification expands what a system can notice or do through capability, discretion, tools, coordination, networks and access to resources.
Implications for practice
When the environment cannot responsibly be simplified, the system must improve its repertoire. Giving people more cases without more authority or capability is workload amplification, not regulatory amplification.
Key distinctions
- response variety vs activity volume
- capability vs options on paper
- sensing amplification vs response amplification
- local amplification vs whole-system overload
Historical development
- Ashby's variety engineering
- management cybernetics
- distributed intelligence
- learning and capability building
Ideas it depends on
- variety
- resources
- knowledge and skill
- authority and coordination
Further developments
- training
- cross-functional teams
- decision support
- networks
- local discretion
Connections to practice
- increase usable responses, not paperwork
- pair discretion with information and resources
- share variety across networks
- test whether amplified responses affect the relevant outcome
Common confusions
- more options always help
- training alone creates variety
- automation necessarily amplifies human capability
- central analytics replace local sensing
Further checks
- Ashby primary passages
- Beer amplification/attenuation
- digital tools and variety
- collective intelligence
