Viability
The capacity of a system to continue as a recognisable whole by balancing present operations, regulation, learning, adaptation and identity under changing conditions.

Summary
Viability is not short-term survival or financial solvency. It concerns whether a system can keep producing itself as a coherent actor while its environment and internal conditions change.
Implications for practice
A viable organisation must handle today's work, disturbances and accountability while sensing and preparing for tomorrow. Central control cannot substitute for local regulatory capacity.
Key distinctions
- viability vs short-term survival
- viability vs efficiency
- viability vs comparative evolutionary fitness
- identity continuity vs structural fixity
- present regulation vs future adaptation
- whole viability vs local optimisation
Historical development
- Ashby and requisite variety

- VSM and recursive viability
- Maturana and Mpodozis's natural-drift account
- later organisational applications
Ideas it depends on
- identity

Connections to practice
- diagnose capability at the system-in-focus

- separate current operations from future intelligence
- test whether identity can change intelligently
Common confusions
- viability means profit
- viability means survival of the fittest
- viability means never failing
- a VSM diagram proves viability
- central command creates cohesion
Further checks

- Espejo and organisational cybernetics
- viability measures
- natural-drift reception and criticism

Requisite inefficiency states an excess-variety condition on Viability
Status: accepted · Relation: constrains
This records Velitchkov's proposal that excess variety may be required for long-run viability; it is not presented as a generally established theorem.
