Summary

Identity is continuity through change, not the absence of change. It is enacted through boundaries, narratives, roles, purposes, memory and repeated relations.

Implications for practice

Organisations can adapt so little that they cease to fit their environment, or change so incoherently that they can no longer say who they are. Viability needs both continuity and movement.
