Adaptation
Change in a system's organisation, behaviour or relations that improves or preserves its capacity to remain viable in a changing environment.

Summary
Adaptation is relational: change is adaptive only with respect to some environment, timescale and viability condition. Local adjustment can make the larger system more fragile.
Implications for practice
Transformation programmes often demand change without specifying what environmental variety has changed or what identity must be preserved. The result is motion rather than adaptation.
Key distinctions
- adaptation vs any change
- local fit vs whole-system viability
- reactive adjustment vs anticipatory learning
- adaptation vs optimisation
Historical development
- biology and evolution
- cybernetics and regulation
- complex adaptive systems
- organisational learning
Ideas it depends on
- environmental change
- variation and response
- feedback and learning
- identity or viability criterion
Further developments
- viability
- resilience
- learning
- strategic intelligence
- innovation
Connections to practice
- state what changed in the environment
- track local and wider effects
- compare adaptation timescales
- retain variety and slack for unknown change
Common confusions
- adaptation is always improvement
- survival proves good design
- optimisation increases adaptability
- change at one level helps every level
Further checks
- Ashby and ultrastability
- Beer System 4
- evolutionary adaptation
- path dependence and maladaptation
