Summary

Regulation is the work of keeping outcomes within acceptable ranges despite disturbance. It may operate through feedback, anticipation, constraints, buffering, redundancy, local autonomy or changes to the environment.

Implications for practice

Regulation is often collapsed into command and control. Ashby instead asks what variety of disturbance reaches the system, what responses are available and which outcomes count as acceptable. The regulator may be distributed rather than a boss or central unit.
