Summary

Feedback is not merely receiving comments. It is a circular relation in which consequences return to influence what happens next. The loop may counteract change, reinforce it, oscillate, delay response or fail because no actor can use the returned information.

Implications for practice

Systems work often says feedback when it means reporting, evaluation, data or learning. Those are only feedback when they close a loop that can alter subsequent action. Sign, delay, reference condition and response capacity determine what the loop actually does.
