Referenced maps and histories

Earlier maps help you see how people have organised the field: as a history, a family tree, a classification or a route into practice. Those forms answer different questions. This directory gives attribution, a reference route and the limits of what has been checked.

Use it alongside the interactive map collection and the atlas’s mapping principles. A source map’s lines aren’t automatically accepted as atlas relationships.

Some Streams of Systemic Thought

A broad genealogy joining philosophical, scientific and practical streams. Several differently named copies resolve to this same chart. Their filenames don't establish different authorship.

Attribution and public ISSS source route checked; no diagram redistribution or automatic influence claims.

Robert E. Horn, with contributions from Debora Hammond's students and ISSS participants · 2006, version 1.0

History of the Ideas of Cybernetics and Systems Science

A large historical mural combining people, quotations, publications and conferences. Two retained versions share this title; exact visual equivalence hasn't been established.

Ralph H. Abraham · 2002 manuscript; published 2011 in World Futures 67(4–5), 380–394

The Genesis of Complexity

A historical reconstruction relating cybernetics, general systems theory and system dynamics to complexity. The dates of the manuscript and published article are kept separate.

Manuscript identity and publisher citation identified. This is Abraham's account of the history; its tree is not adopted as the atlas's final boundary.

A Timeline for the Evolution of Cybernetics

A chronological route through several strands contributing to cybernetics. The source explicitly describes its selection as incomplete.

Official public timeline inspected. A timeline entry is a lead for checking history, not by itself a verified influence relationship.

A Typology for the Systems Field

A published proposal for organising the systems field by its philosophies, theories and practices. It provides a public reference route for the systemology work and comparisons with earlier maps.

Clare Wright · 2012

Field of Systems Thinking

A developmental map reproduced and discussed in the published typology article. Attribution follows the figure caption; no separate live original has been verified.

Hans Georg Graf · 2006

Systems thinking and systems practice map

A comparison linking kinds of systems thinking and systems practice through systemic interests. The public article is the reference route; the historic interactive destination hasn't been verified.

Four domains of the systems sciences

A spectrum of general systems theories, disciplinary theories, systems analysis and applications. It is distinct from the Schwarz chart sometimes stored under a Troncale filename.

A Taxonomy of Systems Science

A classification of systems science, useful for comparison with maps of historical influence. A classification and a genealogy answer different questions.

World of Systems and Systems Maps

A public directory and interactive reading routes that assemble many systems maps. A compiled collection isn't a single new map or a uniform source of evidence.

Coverage still to check

Some retrieved copies were duplicates or incomplete images. Some original destinations no longer work, and not every item in the requested collection could be enumerated. Restricted material has been kept outside this public directory. Individual map links, original editions and diagram relationships still need further verification before a complete comparison or graph import can be claimed.
