Which distinctions can this system act on?
Regulation, models, channels, and transducers
Trace what must survive between a disturbance and an effective response.
Follow this journey interactively
Specify the outcomes to be protected
List the disturbances that matter, the responses available, and the outcomes to keep within bounds. Ashby's section 11/9 allows the transformation itself to remove variety: raw environmental complexity is not the quantity a regulator must simply copy.
Ask what the model has to do
Conant and Ashby derive a condition for a simplest optimal regulator under a specified probability model and entropy criterion. Their mapping need not be a diagram or conscious simulation. The criterion of success remains part of the setup.
Follow the distinctions across the boundary
Beer examines the capacities of operations, communication channels, and boundary transducers separately. A distinction available at one end may disappear when the message changes form. Read the 1989 text's third principle on PDF page 16.
Locate the capacity to respond
Follow the translated signal to an operation or management function able to respond. Beer's recursive account concerns viable functions at embedded levels. This reading route is an editorial sequence, not a new claim of historical derivation.
