Summary
Cohesion connects differentiated parts without erasing their local variety. It is produced through identity, coordination, shared constraints, mutual information and conflict handling.
Implications for practice
Organisations commonly oscillate between silos and centralisation. Cohesion offers a different question: what minimum integration lets autonomy add up to a viable whole?
Key distinctions
- cohesion vs uniformity
- integration vs centralisation
- common identity vs groupthink
- coordination vs command
Historical development
- cybernetic integration
- VSM meta-system
- group dynamics
- differentiation and integration
Ideas it depends on
- differentiated parts
- shared identity or purpose
- coordination channels
- conflict and arbitration capacity
Further developments
- viability
- coordination
- system identity
- collective action
- autonomy
Connections to practice
- define shared constraints
- make interdependence visible
- build lateral coordination
- use escalation for residual variety rather than routine control
Common confusions
- cohesion means everyone agrees
- integration requires hierarchy
- shared purpose removes trade-offs
- strong culture is uniform culture
Further checks
- Beer Systems 2-5
- Oshry differentiation/integration
- coordination mechanisms
- power and imposed cohesion

Claims and disputes
In viable organisation, autonomy of operational parts and cohesion of the whole are complementary requirements rather than alternatives.
Claim status: provisional. Review status: research pass needs editor.
Scope is deliberately narrow. Named editorial review is required.
