Autonomy
The operational freedom and regulatory capacity of a part to respond to its local environment without being reduced to a passive execution point of the whole.

Summary
Autonomy is not independence. A viable part needs discretion, information and resources, while remaining connected to wider identity and constraints.
Implications for practice
Local variety usually outruns central knowledge. Suppressing autonomy can make the whole legible to the centre while making it less able to respond where the work happens.
Key distinctions
- autonomy vs independence
- discretion vs abandonment
- local regulation vs central permission
- part autonomy vs whole viability
Historical development
- cybernetics and distributed regulation
- VSM System 1
- socio-technical systems
- agile and team design
Ideas it depends on
- local environment
- response repertoire
- resources and information
- agreed constraints
Further developments
- requisite variety
- delegation
- accountability
- innovation
- cohesion
Connections to practice
- locate decisions with relevant variety
- give parts resources as well as responsibility
- define non-negotiable whole-system constraints
- monitor outcomes without scripting every action
Common confusions
- autonomy means no rules
- delegation alone creates autonomy
- every unit should optimise itself
- central visibility equals local control
Further checks
- Beer System 1 autonomy
- redundancy of potential command
- subsidiarity
- psychological safety and discretion

Autopoiesis grounds the biological sense of Autonomy
Status: candidate · Relation: explains
Varela, Maturana, and Uribe explain biological autonomy through the continued production of the organisation constituting the unity. This sense of autonomy differs from managerial discretion or political independence.

Claims and disputes
In viable organisation, autonomy of operational parts and cohesion of the whole are complementary requirements rather than alternatives.
Claim status: provisional. Review status: research pass needs editor.
Scope is deliberately narrow. Named editorial review is required.
