Power enters before the intervention

Boundary, purpose, observer and critique

A route showing why power is built into systems practice before anyone chooses a method.

Follow this journey interactively

  1. Locate who can notice and name

Observers do not arrive with equal sensors, standing or consequences. Observation is already situated in relations of authority and dependence.

    Read Observer

  2. Ask who and what is made relevant

A boundary distributes attention, resources, responsibility and exclusion. It is not merely a neutral outline around an object.

    Read Boundary

  3. Find the criterion being privileged

Different purposes make different systems visible and give different people the right to define success.

    Read Purpose

  4. Make boundary judgements discussable

Critical questioning can expose who ought to decide, who benefits, whose expertise counts and who bears the effects.

    Read Critical Systems Heuristics (CSH)

  5. Treat method choice as part of the situation

Intervention changes the relationships through which the situation is known. The practitioner is not outside the consequences of the inquiry.
