Summary
The project describes S-prime as containing S-type subsystems and an additional control mechanism. Its scale is the number integrated; the minimum is one, when a new control level appears without replication. Turchin treats integration as necessary but insufficient in his social example.
Implications for practice
Ask what is controlled, what new controlling mechanism appears, and what evidence demonstrates it.
Key distinctions
- Aggregation or integration alone does not establish a new control level.
- The definition does not establish that an observed transition is beneficial, inevitable, or just.

Common confusions

Metasystem transition specialises emergence as a new higher level of control within Emergence
Status: accepted · Relation: specialises
The project describes a metasystem transition as the emergence of a higher level of control. This is Principia's technical specialisation of emergence, not a synonym for every emergent phenomenon.
