Summary
Distinctions make a world manageable enough for thought and action. They do not merely copy divisions already waiting in reality; they select, stabilise and test differences for a purpose.
Implications for practice
Every system map, category, KPI, service boundary and diagnosis begins with distinctions. Hidden distinctions are often more influential than explicit conclusions.
Key distinctions
- distinction vs classification
- marked side vs unmarked remainder
- useful distinction vs true-for-all-time division
- difference noticed vs difference made consequential
Historical development
- logic and mathematics of distinction
- cybernetic observer-inclusion
- constructivist and enactive epistemology
- systems practice and boundary critique
Ideas it depends on
- an observer or system capable of indication
- context and purpose
- contrast or difference
Further developments
- boundary
- information
- category
- system identity
- measurement
Connections to practice
- ask what difference is being marked
- name what falls into the unmarked remainder
- test whether another distinction changes action
- avoid turning a convenient cut into a natural kind
Common confusions
- distinctions are arbitrary
- distinctions are simply discovered
- one correct decomposition exists
- drawing more categories necessarily increases understanding
Further checks
- Spencer-Brown lineage
- Maturana and Varela
- Luhmann and observation
- links to measurement and categorisation

Cabrera and Colosi describe distinctions, systems, relationships, and perspectives as interacting patterns with paired elements. Their claim of universality remains the authors’ claim.

Claims and disputes
A system boundary is a distinction: changing the distinction changes what is treated as system, environment or margin.
Claim status: corroborated. Review status: research pass needs editor.
Scope is deliberately narrow. Named editorial review is required.
