The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis
A mathematical proposal for how local chemical reactions and diffusion can destabilise a nearly homogeneous state and generate spatial concentration patterns.

Summary
Turing tests which spatial disturbances grow when reaction rates and diffusion couple locations. The calculation concerns onset near equilibrium; nonlinear development and geometry matter for the eventual form. The mechanism is proposed through idealised chemistry, not established for a particular organism.
Implications for practice
It prompts a precise question: which interactions could amplify a difference that was initially small? A pattern need not have been specified as a whole for a model to produce it.
Key distinctions
- Stability against a uniform change differs from stability against spatial modes. Diffusion does not make every reacting system unstable.
- A fastest-growing mode concerns early growth; it does not alone determine the final large-amplitude form.
- Disturbances seed departures, while the reaction, diffusion, and permitted geometry constrain their growth.

Connections to practice
- Original model example: § 10 uses twenty cells and two hypothetical reacting substances. Its numerical run varies a catalyst parameter; at the final γ=0 a slightly stable uniform state and stable patterned equilibria coexist. This is a constructed calculation, not an observed embryo.
- Fictional editorial inquiry: specify a local workload-amplification rule and cross-team exchange rule for initially similar service teams. Name the units, network, disturbance, and observation that could falsify the proposed mechanism.
- Editorial transfer limit: people, institutions, strategic responses, and meanings do not become chemical substances. Establish an actual exchange law before borrowing diffusion mathematics.
Common confusions
- Noise by itself explains the resulting pattern.
- Every kind of diffusion creates spatial structure.
- The paper experimentally proves that an actual biological form was produced by the proposed chemistry.
Further checks
- This account checks the 1952 model and its qualifications, not later experimental morphogenesis research.
- The organisational inquiry is fictional editorial work; it supplies no intervention-effectiveness evidence.
