Transposing theory: move up to a pattern and back down

Test a structural analogy rather than importing a solution because two situations sound alike.

Framework link: Transposing Theory (YoYo model). Apprenticeship practice links: K1, K2, S1, S2, S4, S9.

What this exercise can and cannot establish

A basic abstraction-and-return rehearsal for the framework's transposing-theory row. Its resource list also cites Yi Lin's systemic yoyo; this exercise does not teach or validate that distinct formal model. The terminology and intended depth should be checked with your tutor.

This is original learning material, not a reproduced official course. Mechanical checks have determinate answers within the stated case. Worked comparisons for open judgements show defensible reasoning, not the only possible model. Specialist pedagogical review is not recorded.

The case

Fictional case A: a warehouse orders replacement stock from last month's sales. Delivery takes four weeks. When shelves empty, several managers independently raise urgent orders. Stock later arrives together and exceeds storage capacity. Fictional case B: a council trains additional caseworkers using last quarter's backlog. Training takes six months. Several services independently commission the same small pool of trainers. Trainees arrive after demand has changed. Casework, unlike boxes, also varies in urgency, consent, relationship and complexity.

Work through it

Use paper, your own drawing tool or the notes below. Attempt each step before opening its comparison. Describe a diagram in words when that is more accessible.

  1. 1. Write the common structural pattern without using warehouse or council nouns.

    Produce: A four-part abstract model.

Compare your work for step 1

A demand signal is delayed; a replenishment decision is made from it; the replenishment takes time; independent decision-makers may duplicate orders while the pipeline is invisible. The resulting overshoot is a hypothesis generated by that structure. 'Both organisations need better leadership' is too unspecific to transpose or test.

  2. 2. Map the abstract elements into case B.

Produce: A correspondence table with at least one non-correspondence.

Compare your work for step 2

Stock corresponds only partially to available trained capacity; orders correspond to training commissions; delivery lead time to training delay; hidden pipeline to trainees already commissioned. People are not interchangeable inventory. Capabilities, supervision, retention, consent and case mix alter the comparison. State where the analogy stops.

  3. 3. Derive a modest intervention and a falsification test.

Produce: One intervention hypothesis with a measurable challenge.

Compare your work for step 3

Make current training commitments and expected completion dates visible across services before commissioning more. Predict fewer duplicated commissions without reducing necessary capability. Compare unique requirements, commissions and later staffing gaps. If duplication persists because services require incompatible skills, the shared-inventory model needs revision rather than stronger enforcement.

Check the basic distinctions

These checks test the supplied case, not your overall competence. Open answers and model variants still need your judgement.

1. Which is the transferable part of the example?

Answer and reasoning 1

The delayed signal, replenishment pipeline and duplicated decisions

The proposed correspondence concerns relationships and delays. Neither an arbitrary parameter nor a literal identity between people and inventory follows.

2. What should happen when case mix invalidates interchangeability?

Answer and reasoning 2

Revise the abstraction or stop using it

A theory is useful through an explicit fit with the situation. A failed correspondence is information about its limit.

Repair a defective model or claim

'Hospitals are factories, so the warehouse rule should be applied unchanged to patients.'
Compare your repair

Name the limited structural correspondence, then examine consent, urgency, variable needs, clinical judgement and care relationships. Transfer a question or tested mechanism, not a whole identity or managerial prescription.

Try a changed case before looking

Apply the same pattern to recruiting volunteer interpreters. Name one correspondence and one reason a numerical inventory rule might fail.

Compare the changed case

A recruitment-to-availability delay is a correspondence. Language combinations, availability, confidentiality and matching requirements make volunteer capacity heterogeneous. A single total may hide a shortage in one language alongside unused capacity in another.

Review the process, not just the score

A different model can be defensible when its purpose, assumptions and reasoning are explicit. A contradiction, incorrect unit, invented fact or unacknowledged change of purpose needs repair. Keep both your first attempt and revision.

Keep your attempt

No sign-in or submission is required. Notes are not sent by this practice tool. Use fictional information, not identifiable client or learner data. Saving stores this page's attempt only in this browser; clearing browser data can remove it. Export a copy to keep it elsewhere.

External resources and their limits

The complete original case above is free. Links below distinguish exercises from explanations, recordings, software and paid study. Reading a page or drawing in a tool is not itself a model check.

What was checked, and what was not

Public sharing confirmed; approach and theory bibliography inspected. The presence of a reference does not establish that it contains self-check exercises.
